At our Boston, MA Web Design Company one of the most common questions that we get asked is “How much does a website cost?”
Our answer is, “It depends upon the scope of the project, the functionality of the new website, and the amount of customization required.” Can we give you a ballpark figure after a short discussion? More than likely the answer is yes, however, we have worked on website design and development projects that have had budgets ranging from a few thousand dollars to a few hundred thousand dollars. It is only after our team looks over the goals, functionality requirements, and design aspects that we can create a scope of work document which will dictate the amount of time required and the costs involved.
Some web design companies will tell you during the first call, or even on their website, the price will be X number of dollars. If a web design company tells you that then you know they don’t fully understand what will be involved in creating a custom solution for you, will not craft a site tailored to your business goals and user objectives, and will probably pull something “off the shelf.”
The only way that we can tell you how much a website will cost is if we completely understand the scope of the project. There is just no way that we (or any other custom website design company worth their salt) can tell you how much to budget for the project during the first phone conversation. We can (and often do) give an estimated price range during the initial discussions but we create custom solutions to custom problems and therefore do not have “off-the-shelf” pricing.
One of the best examples that we reference is buying a car. If you ask “How much does a car cost?” then you first need to answer some other questions in order to get a price range: “What kind of car do you want?”, “How many seats?”, “How many doors?”, “What is the electronics package you desire?”, etc, etc… Depending on the answers to these questions you could get a quote on your new car from $2,500 to $250,000 – it is a similar situation with prices for a website design.
My apologies if you were expecting this short article to give you a fixed dollar amount per page or something along the lines of “between $X and $Y” – we are not that kind of web development company and we do not design those kinds of websites.
If you are looking for a new website then shop around but beware of those design shops which tell you during the first 10 minutes it will cost $X and be done in X number of days. If you want something “off the shelf” then maybe that kind of design company is a good fit for you, but it’s “apples and oranges”.
However, we do create custom websites using adaptive/responsive standards compliant, open-source solutions, and we would be very happy to discuss your project with you and customize a quote that works within your budget and meets your requirements. To find out more please contact us.
