SandCamp 2016

SandCamp 2016

With clear weather and an ideal venue on Mission Bay in sunny San Diego California,SandCamp 2016 was a great way to spend a few days learning and gaining inspiration to dive deeper into everything new Drupal 8 brings to the table.

The camp opened on Wednesday Feb 24th, with 2 days of half and full day training sessions, some paid, some free. The topics for these in-depth sessions included Kalabox, OO PHP, multilingual sites, D7 module development/theming, Backdrop, and of course Drupal 8 module development.

For most however, the camp started on Friday. The doors opened at 8:30 for registration and the camp was churning 5 tracks of quality sessions, for beginner through advanced developers/themers, by Drupal professionals from around the country and beyond!

International rockstar, Jesus Manuel Olivas with FFW, provided a half day D8 module building class on Thursday followed by several sessions on Friday and Saturday featuring the beloved Drupal Console.

If you haven't heard, Drupal Console is a CLI tool that makes Drupal 8 development more approachable by providing generators for tasks like creating entities, fields, etc... It also provides a powerful way to examine and debug a Drupal 8 application.

Other companies sent their best from around the country to attend and present in a strong show of support for "the Drupal camp at the beach".

Jon Peck of Four Kitchens and author of the site audit module gave a great talk with lots of resources, not only for auditing, but tools you can incorporate into your development workflow which help enforce compliance with best practices, keeping you ahead of an audit in the first place.

Tom Friedhof of ActiveLamp presented a couple advanced sessions I particularly enjoyed. One on OO development with entities and another on how panels is misunderstood.

The camp wrapped up on Saturday evening with food and drinks at the beach front pub, Wonderland, in Ocean Beach. As with any party composed of passionate Drupalers, the festivities, camaraderie, and shenanigans persisted late into the night.

Thanks to all involved in putting on SandCamp 2016!
