BPG the JPG Killer ?

BPG the JPG Killer ?

BPG stands for Better Portable Graphics. BPG is a new image format that delivers amazing quality, and a smaller file size.

Should JPG be scared out of its boots?

Probably not yet. But French programmer Fabric Bellard, who created the BPG files, sure hopes so.

The proof is in the pudding:

The Good:

  • Smaller file size
  • Amazing quality, less color banding and blocking
  • BPG’s don’t have much step-ladder aliasing: the reason why they look sharp even at small sizes
  • Supports animation (ability to create gifs that are half the size of equivalent MP4)
  • Handles transparency (something JPG can’t do)

The Bad:

  • Lack of native support
  • Decompile time is longer… lack of native support extends its decompile time
  • Not open source and possibly not free. BPG is created by using HEVC video compression technology, which is patented by MPEG LA.They could eventually charge royalties on software and hardware that has BPG decoders built in it.

In conclusion, this seems like a fantastic alternative to using jpgs. However, lack of support and a learning curve that is probably based on designers just being comfortable with JPG’s may be BPG’s downfall.
